Improving local nutrition and incomes

Mvuvi addresses food insecurity in Africa, especially in Mozambique, where most people can’t afford a nutritious diet. With a well-established breeding program, Mvuvi is increasing local fish production, training small-scale farmers, and building strong supply chains to provide an affordable, sustainable source of protein while reducing dependence on imports and overfishing.

Why Goodwell invested

Mvuvi is a vertically integrated aquaculture company, formed by the 2024 Chicoa Fish Farms and Lake Harvest merger. They focus on local fish production and processing, increasing access to affordable protein while helping to preserve marine resources. The company’s responsible resource management and informal trader network improve food security and livelihoods in Mozambique, Malawi, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.

Recent achievements and future ambitions

By 2025, Mvuvi had the largest tilapia production footprint in Africa. While the merger took longer than initially anticipated, Q1 2026 marked an inflection point for Mvuvi, with 10 million protein portions delivered across four countries.

By the end of 2025, the company was working with 1,515 informal traders (53% women) who earn approximately USD 200 profit per month. The company also secured a grant from GIZ to support 300 small-scale fishers and two aquaculture training hubs in Mozambique.

How aquaculture provides a fresh, affordable source of protein

“As an anchor farm, we act as a catalyst. Overcoming hurdles, creating availability, and building markets. It’s not just about what we do directly, but also about what we provide indirectly. The hope is that it can be replicated.”

- Jayson Coomer, CFO Mvuvi
