Our theory of change
We believe in a world with no one left behind. To achieve our mission, we carefully select investees that resonate with our core values and work with them to enhance their governance and expand their impact. Through our investees, we deliver affordable products and services to underserved audiences, resulting in improved livelihoods, inclusive economic growth, and sustainable financial returns for investors.
Value addition for investees
We achieve these goals by offering investees support that goes far beyond financing. Combining funding with locally led collaboration, Goodwell actively advises portfolio companies on strategy, governance, ESG, and inclusion. We provide long runways to give investees time to realise their ambitions, while our reputation as first-movers attracts additional funding and network connections.
Climate lens investing
Because underserved communities are hit the hardest by climate change, we believe that climate resilience is a fundamental pillar of responsible investing. Taking a holistic, people-centred approach, we look at every potential investment through a climate lens that considers adaptation, mitigation, and innovation to address pervasive environmental challenges. Our uMunthu and uMunthu II portfolios are already making clear progress; with our IYBA WE4A partnership and new Growth Capital Fund, we’re putting an even greater emphasis on climate resilience and green transformation.
Gender lens
Inclusive economic growth cannot be achieved without gender equality. Through our fuunding approach and internal practices, we aim to reduce systemic gender bias, strengthen business performance, and contribute to more inclusive and sustainable development. Across our portfolio, we prioritise investments that promote women’s participation in leadership, workforce development, and economic value chains, and our recent IYBA WE4A partnership focuses entirely on providing financial and technical assistance to female entrepreneurs.
Impact & ESG
Every company we invest in has impact at its core, and is assessed using Goodwell’s Impact and ESG framework. While we don’t set specific impact targets for investees, we measure their progress over time with periodicreporting that aligns with recognised impact measurement frameworks like GRI Standards and IRIS+. We hold ourselves to the same standards we expect from our investees, actively working to reduce our company’s environmental footprint, implement inclusive hiring practices, and maintain strong internal governance and decision-making structures.
