Connecting smallholder farmers to global markets

Souk Farms works with over 1,200 smallholder farmers, providing them with seeds, training, irrigation support, and access to international markets. Its main crops include avocados, chillies, French beans, and sugar snap peas. By investing in cold chain logistics, the company minimises food spoilage while enabling year-round produce availability. Through job creation, sustainable practices, and higher farmer incomes, Souk Farms makes a lasting impact on smallholder livelihoods.

Why Goodwell invested

Goodwell works to build resilient agricultural value chains, reduce post-harvest losses, and create better livelihoods for smallholder farmers. Souk Farms’ strategy directly aligns with these goals, tackling agricultural inefficiencies in Rwanda by combining in-house farming operations with a wide network of out-growers. Souk Farms’ integration of cold chain infrastructure, local job creation, and gender-inclusive hiring reinforces our shared mission to serve underserved agricultural markets.

Recent achievements and future ambitions

In the past year, Souk Farms has put a stronger focus on improving gender inclusion in the agricultural sector. Female employees now make up 64% of the workforce, and women have gained a formal voice in leadership with 25% board representation. In terms of productivity, Souk is participating in Rwanda’s plan to boost avocado exports by 600%. That means increasing their harvest to around 16,000 tons per year by 2026, driven by extensive planting initiatives and outgrower integration.

“Where we have the biggest impact is with our farming partners: I typically don’t refer to our smallholder farmers as smallholder farmers. I refer to them as our farming partners and it brings me great joy to actually see the impact we make in the lives of our average farmers.”

Seun Rasheed – CEO and Founder of Souk Farms
